Rain Catch

Document Actions
Catching water that comes out of the sky is a lot easier than pumping it up out of the ground. Since we get most of our rainfall in two short time periods during the year, storing the water collected is really the big trick.

We currently have rain catch set up on the greenhouse. The water is caught by gutters and feeds down into large plastic barrels. We use this water to irrigate the greenhouse and also to water the chickens in the nearby coop. We figure 50% of the water for the greenhouse comes from the water catch that we do.

Rain catch quantity can be estimated at the square footage of the roof x .7 per inch of rain that falls. Currently we can store 200 gallons in four 50 gallon containers. We have two more 50 gal containers which are hooked up to gravity fed auto watering systems for the chickens and bunnies. We refill these periodically.

We plan to expand our water catch to include the chicken coop and bunny shed roofs. We despair of finding a way to get rain catch on the dome... the shape just doesn't lend itself to this effort. But the new house plans specifically include a roof design to make rain catch possible.
