Propane

Document Actions
We are off the grid but haven't quite managed to give up using this fairly conventional and traditional power source.

We are working on ways to get off of propane including looking at hydrogen, methane, and solar water heating, but we have come to the conclusion that our solar power electrical system will have to expand substantially (to support refrigerator) and our house will have to have better native environmental controls before we are going to be able to really give up the propane entirely.

We use propane power to heat our tap water, run our kitchen stovetop & oven, and to run spot heaters inside the house for cold winter nights.

We have a propane powered instant hot water heater installed in the bathroom. We have looked at solar water heating set ups, but not having endless hot water available any day, any time of the day just isn't acceptable. Light we can substitute for or do without, hot water is where Lillith draws the line of civilization and is unwilling to compromise on the convenience. Everybody has this line, and we found ours!

We acquired a used propane Crystal Cold refrigerator for about $1500. These are built by Amish folks and are extremely efficient. They cool off faster and stay cold better than any other propane refrigerators, and they have more space / capacity than any other propane fridge we could find. They are also a lot quieter than electric refrigerators.
